Although not central to the romantic plot, cabaret singer Reno Sweeney is clearly the star attraction, as befits a role originated by Ethel Merman. In the Pacific Coast Rep production, Joy Sherratt is an appropriately brassy and boisterous Reno with a magnetic stage presence. At first she’s clearly putting on an exaggerated vintage shtick with her speaking voice, but that stops being obtrusive pretty quickly, and her musical numbers are terrific, especially when bolstered by her four backup Angels.

ANTIOCH — The Brentwood Children’s Ballet Theater will host its seventh annual production of “The Nutcracker” at noon and 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at El Campanil Theatre, 602 W. Second St. The timeless holiday tradition brings a young girl’s Christmas dream to life.
